Pancreatitis & Popcorn

popcorn pancreasPopcorn is my bestest friend in the whole wide world! :-)

Okay, maybe not, but you get the jist.

Popcorn doesn't hurt my pancreas. I pop it myself from kernels using Canola or Olive Oil on the bottom of the pot.

Popcorn is not a fatty food.pancreatitis popcorn

Popcorn is a grain which is important for my balanced diet.

Popcorn helps to keep me regular which helps to flush my GI tract promoting a stronger system overall.

I use iodized salt on my popcorn which is essential my thyroid. My thyroid is part my endocrineendocrine pancreas system. My pancreas is part of my endocrine system.

My thought is that maintaining proper health throughout my endocrine system will increase longevity for my pancreas.

Therefore, I eat popcorn!

Notes: Flavored pre-popped popcorn and flavored microwavable popcorn tend to contain ingredients that are not natural. Some of these ingredients could hurt my pancreas or simply not be healthy to digest so I pop my own.

I use both generic and Orville's popcorn. Both have different instructions so for the best tasting popcorn don't assume the same cooking directions work equally well for both. I learned this the hard way!

  1. I wish, Oh, how I wish I had come across this website sooner and known how my sister suffered from pancreatitis. She was an alcoholic and I had no idea she suffered from pancreatitis until it killed her on Wed. Aug. 31, 2011. She was the type that suffered in silence. I pray that your battle with this is won and you can live as normal a life as possible for a long time.
    God bless you!

  2. Thank you for your kind words and well wishes. I'm so sorry for your loss. Hopefully we will make headway with this horrible disease as we begin to take matters into our own hands and share our experience, strength and hope! My kindest wishes to you.

  3. Why not just remove the oils (fat, as ALL OILS ARE FATS) Vegetable doesn't mean anything, it's still FAT. Confused? Think about how you talk about nuts, yeah, they ARE good for you, but, for folks like us with pancreatitis, removal or avoidance of ANY and ALL FAT is best. Invest in a hot air popper and use that for your popcorn. There's no oil used in the popping process. You get ALL the fiber, you can throw your salt or other favorite spice; curry perhaps? in after popping. You get ALL the benefits of eating the popcorn, without the addition of a fat to your daily intake. ...just a suggestion.

    1. I'm not sure completely removing all fats from one's diet is a good thing for the overall health of one's body. It is important to keep a balanced diet while ensuring the health of the pancreas. Taking good fats out of one's diet completely could be harmful in other ways, no?

    2. Removing all fat from your diet will cause a host of nutritional disorders. There are fats the pancreas can digest, and it's important to get them in our diets!
