Pancreatitis & Shrimp Dinner

Pancreatitis and ShrimpI love shrimp. It never seems to hurt my pancreas, seems easy to digest and tastes great!
Also!! You can cook it with turmeric and curry. Curry is made from turmeric. I use them both anyway. :-) Turmeric is a known anti-inflammatory. Since foods can inflame the pancreas I love it when I can add anti-inflammatories to my meals. The goal is to counter-attack any onset of inflammation from the get-go.
So, I put some shrimp in a pan, Add a little margarine or olive oil. Add some iodized salt and freshly ground pepper. A pinch of curry and a pinch of turmeric. Two bay leaves. A little shrimp juice in the bottom of the pan. And voila! A mid-low heat for 12-20 minutes and I have a
Turmeric and Pancreatitis
fabulous meal that doesn't bother my pancreas and tastes fantastic!

Food for thought: If there is left-over sauce it takes fantastic with a little curried rice. Rice is fairly easy on the pancreas (for people who are back on solids) and again, the curry is an anti-inflammatory which I assume to be helpful in reducing my chances of bloating and discomfort in my abdomen.

The happier I keep my pancreas, the longer I get to live. Well... at least that is the hypothesis I'm working with. :-)

If you have any recipes that work for you, please share them! Especially when we're newly on a diet which is kinder to our pancreas it can be difficult to know what foods and we can eat.

  2. Hi there!

You are so sweet both to me and your father. He is very lucky to have you and I appreciate your kind words and am very impressed that you went through all 94 posts.

I know that when I needed help about food and pancreatitis there just wasn't anything out there. So, as I live and learn I try to share my experience, strength and hope.

All the best to you and your father!

  3. Hi, I am so pleased to find your blog. I have had chronic pancreaitis for the past 4 months, been in hospital twice. Fed up with drugs sent home, told I had anxiety, ibs. Saw a great doc/specialist yesterday, who diagnosed me right away. I have lost 10 kg in the past few months, and have felt like dying. I am so lucky to have a wonderful man, who is helping me go thru this day by day, hour by hour.
I am on a liquid diet and this has helped, and have learnt by trial and error what i can eat. It is great to have such a positive blog. I have been doing the baby food, fruit and vege juicing, yoghurt. I have hardly ever drunk alcohol, and would not touch it.
Just wonder why I have this illness? I am a worrywort, so that probably has not helped with the anxiety, of wondering what was going on and some docs treating me like a nut job.
I hope i can introduce some yummy foods into my diet slowly.. I sure know the pain that food causes with the wrong choice. I have had 6 weeks off work, drugged up on meds.
Are now just taking panadol as needed and gastrosoothe. A sleeping pill at night.
I am back at work, but only doing a few hours, it is good to busy and semi-functioning now.
Thank you for sharing, it is great to read your posts. luv Alex

  4. Hi Alex!
Thanks for your response. So good to hear from others going through the same thing. Sometimes, this can feel like a very isolating disease and not understanding what is going on can be so frustrating and scary.
I know exactly how you feel when you say that you felt like dying. Honestly, I think that tends to be a fairly common response. So it's important that we know that feeling like that is par for the course, rather than out of the ordinary.
Alcohol is not the only thing that causes it. You are proof of that. Sharing our experience can help us figure out what else can weaken the pancreas and make someone more vulnerable to this disease.
My experience with medications is that I prefer not to take them as I find most things have the potential of making my pancreas more sensitive.
When it comes to losing weight my attitude is I'd rather be skinny than dead and the truth is that trying to eat too soon can be very, very hard on the pancreas with the potential for scaring which is not the direction one wants to go. Therefore, skinny is fine.
    Again, thanks for sharing!
All the best to you. Hope you feel better soon. Give it time. It's a process and don't stress over it. If for no other reason, simply because it won't help. :-)
    Best,
    Christine
